In this section we provide a little history of how animation started in the 1800s and the origins of computer animation.

The main sections are:

  • Animation History: traces some of the early history of conventional animation from the 1800's to 1940
  • Computer Image: the origins of analogue computer animation systems pioneered by Computer Image Corporation of Denver
  • Computer Animation: describes the early computer peripherals capable of generating films with emphasis on the SC4020 microfilm recorder upon which most of the early computer animations were produced (1962-1975)
  • Animation Systems: brief descriptions of some of the early software for computer animation systems
  • Early Examples: Examples of computer animation in the period up to 1975
